Bali 16 - Ubud Palace

Located across the road from rendezvous square is the Ubud Palace built during 18th century. If you are tired of the monkey forest and souvenir shops this is the place to visit. The architecture, the antique furniture and the garden are awesomely gorgeous. Unfortunately only a small part of the palace is open to public. Make sure you don't encroach into the part marked Closed. The guard will be very unhappy as I found out with some tourists

Ubud, a town in central Bali, is far removed from the drunken bikini scene in Kuta, and is regarded as the cultural centre of Bali. It is famous as an arts and crafts hub, and much of the town and nearby villages seems to consist of artists' workshops and galleries. There are some remarkable architectural sights, artistic gems to be found, and a general feeling of well being to be enjoyed, all thanks to the spirit, surroundings, and climate of the place.

Surrounding Ubud are a series of small towns and villages which specialize in the production of particular arts and crafts. The towns are Batubulan/Singakerta for stone carvings, Celuk for silver jewelry, Batuan for paintings, and Mas for wood carvings. The whole area is sometimes referred to as the "craft villages" of Bali. (source: http://wikitravel.org/en/Ubud)

There are many Barong dance stages in Bali with regular daily shows. The well known ones are in the town of Batublan. Barong dance is a mixture of Balinese traditional dance, drama and music. The story behind the dance is the fight between the Barong (good) and Rangda (evil). Watch them on youtube here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11wYyDfqURY) and decide if you want to spend Rp80,000 and 1 hour to see the real one.

Candle light dinner on the beach - romantic but expensive (by Penang kedekut standard). However the sunset view is awesome.

The Sea Temple of Tanah Lot is said to be founded by the 16th-century priest Nirartha. The temple is built on a small rock off the coast accessible by foot only at low tide. During high water the rock takes on the appearance of a large boat at sea. The temple is one of Bali's most sacred sea temples dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea and has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries.
