Bali 6 - Potong Gigi (Teeth Filing) ceremony at Denpasar

The temple where the ceremony was held

We were extremely lucky to witness this very colourful ceremony at a temple on the outskirt of Denpasar.

On 3rd day we decided to be adventurous and took a mini bus to Denpasar (1 hr, Rp10k). We were rather disappointed that the bus stopped at the outskirt and not in town center. While walking around we heard some loud gamelan music playing in a temple. The temple was full of locals in ceremonial dress. We asked permission before entering.

The people were very friendly. They told us this is a once a year Potong Gigi ceremony to mark young boys and girls entering into adulthood, or coming of age. This year there are 12 boys and 4 girls taking part. Each paid equivalent of USD3000. That's a lot of money. The ritual lasted 3 days and today is the finale. Gotong Gigi symbolises removal of evil, cleansing the spirit, and prepare the youngster for adulthood (Google).

Today the yougsters will have their teeth filed and carried in an armchair and processed to the grand temple 500M away for the final blessing. We followed the procession and met Jurgen and wife from Berlin. We were the only 4 foreigners in the ceremony. This is a bonus to our Bali trip.

The infamous 2002 Bali terrorist bombing that killed more than 200 tourists and locals happened here in Jln Legian. A monument was built to remember the death. The street is lined with restaurants and pubs and traditional Balinese buildings. A tourist hot spot.

Legian is pronounced Ler-Gee-An, not Legion.

Jalan Pantai Kuta is the road running parallel to the beach. A stone wall was erected between the beach and the road probably to reduce accident caused by driver distracted by all those bikini girls.

How they could withstand the scorching sun, even with those suntan lotion, is beyond me. By the way I captured a nudist foto here (XXX)...
